Looking for a ‘Wonder Woman’ exercise routine – then look no further than what actress Gal Gadot has done to get in shape for the Wonder Woman movie she just completed.
GoodHousekeeping looked at what Gal Gadot did to achieve her physically challenging role in the movie and what you can do too if you’re so inclined.
In the movie, which just came out in theaters and on HBO Max, the 35-year-old actress shows off her unbelievable strength while running, jumping, and fighting all the bad guys with Wonder Woman’s magical lasso. Needless to say, filming WW1984 was quite a challenging fitness feat, even for the former Israeli Army combat instructor.
“When I worked out for Wonder Woman it was much more intensive and broad. For six months, we prepped for the movie where I [would] wake up every morning, drink Smartwater, go to the gym, and workout,” Gal, a spokesperson for Smartwater, told Good Housekeeping back in January. “I did a lot of strength training, cardio, stunt choreography, and flexibility work.”
“For the first time with this movie, I incorporated pilates into my workout routine because I feel like there’s something so holistic about pilates and opening your rib cage and actually focusing on breathing.”
In between shooting the movie, which already involved lots of vigorous stunt work, she worked out a whopping four hours a day.
What’s more, Gal adhered to a specific diet plan to fuel her intensive workouts. While it’s been reported that she eats eggs with fruit and coffee in the morning, the main staple of Gal’s diet was, and continues to be, veggies.
“Usually, when I start a project, and again it depends on how long the project is, I try to stay very healthy,” she explained to us. “I am big on veggies, I love salads … I try to keep it healthy, so I try to keep it high in protein and low in carbs.”
That said, when the hours got especially long and Gal craved something heavier, she always turned to her favorite comfort food on set: “I always go for grilled cheese. Grilled cheese with Manchego cheese inside. It’s so good!”
Of course, good food is only one element of Gal’s wellness routine. Whether filming or not, Gal really tries to meditate frequently, avoid screen time as much as possible, and go for walks whenever she has time.
“It’s all about balancing your life mentally, emotionally, physically, and creatively. And stay hydrated at the same time, obviously. But it’s all about finding more time for yourself,” she declared. “When I put my oldest [daughter, Alma] to bed, there are those apps with the guided meditations that I’ll play for her, and we’ll both fall asleep. I think that’s a great thing to do with your child.”
Her other top wellness tip? Drinking lots and lots of water, which is a huge reason why she decided to partner with Smartwater — keeping hydrated is “an integral part” of how Gal stays motivated and driven, even when she’s exhausted.
“I drink a lot. The moment I wake up in the morning I make sure I drink. When I work on sets, I drink all the time,” Gal said. “I do it honestly at every break that I have, even when I’m not thirsty. It’s so important.”
